The New Archbishop of Cebu

Last October 15, 2010 Pope Benedict XVI named Archbishop Jose Palma of Palo as the new head of the Archdiocese of Cebu.

Archbishop Palma, vice president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), replaced Cardinal Ricardo Vidal who retired.

Archbishop Edward Joseph Adams, papal nuncio to the Philippines, relayed the news of Archbishop Palma’s appointment to Monsignor Pedro Quitorio, media director of the bishop conference.

I wrote to inform you that the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI has appointed His Excellency Most Rev. Jose S. Palma until now the Archbishop of Palo, as Archbishop of Cebu,” read the letter of Archbishop Adams dated Oct. 14.

Cardinal Vidal submitted his retirement papers to the Pope in February 2006 when he turned 75 years old. Canon law requires that Catholic bishops tender their resignation on their 75th birthday.

 

Who is Archbishop Palma of Cebu?

 

This is his profile and information that was gathered. The Most Reverend José Serofia Palma, D.D. PhD (born 19 March 1950) is the current archbishop of Cebu since his appointment by Pope Benedict XVI on 15 October 2010.[1] He had previously served as archbishop of Palo in the province of Leyte, on the island of Visayas.

Palma was born in Dingle in the Archdiocese of Jaro. He studied philosophy at the St. Vincent Ferrer Seminary and theological studies at the St. Joseph Regional Seminary. He received his licentiate in Sacred Theology at the University St. Thomas Manila, and a doctorate from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Jaro on 21 August 1976.

After a year as assistant priest at the Cathedral of Jaro, he taught at the St Vincent Ferrer Seminary and then became rector of St. Joseph Regional Seminary. Meanwhile, he also held various positions in several diocesan commissions. In 1997 he was parish priest of the Parish of St Anthony of Padua in Jaro. On 28 November 1997, Pope John Paul II appointed him Titular Bishop of Vazari Diddi and Auxiliary Bishop of Cebu. He was consecrated on 13 January 1998. Exactly as year later, he was transferred to the See of Calbayog.

On 18 March 2006, Palma was appointed archbishop of Palo by Pope Benedict. He has elected Vice-President of the Episcopal Conference of the Philippines on 1 December 2009. And right now he is replacing RICARDO CARDINAL VIDAL as the head of Archdiocese of Cebu it is from Leyte to Cebu.

      i dont know about the ordination of him being the cardinal.. I think it takes a year before he will take the cardinal things in cebu..
